A space of his own

We’ve been in our current house for almost three years now and Avery’s room really hasn’t changed from the day we moved in. We found and repainted a vintage motel furniture set for him (an interesting story for another time), but the room’s white walls still left much to be desired.

Since a child’s interests vary from day-to-day, the intent was to create a space-themed room with relatively little commitment. One that in the next few years we can easily transition his room by removing just a few pieces of art and items to reflect his interests as a preteen.

These are Avery’s favorite books on the solar system. And I must admit, mine too. They provided the perfect direction with their clean, graphic depictions of the planets and their modern color palettes to set the tone of the room. The challenge was let the book images influence the decor without going overly themey with planet bedspreads and solar system mobiles.

The solution: chalkboard paint! I love the matte finish of chalkboard paint and paired with his telescope and moon night light, it feels like one is sleeping under the stars.
